About Ikanos Systems
A small software studio in San Diego, California, building applications for companies that need something specific rather than something off the shelf.
The name
Ikanós (ικανός) is Greek for capable — competent, sufficient to the task. It is an unglamorous standard, and the right one for software that other people depend on.
What we believe about building software
- The constraint you ignore is the one that ships. Battery, bandwidth, memory on the server you can afford, and what the operating system will actually let an app do in the background. These decide the shape of a product, and they are cheaper to confront in week one than in month six.
- A backup nobody has restored is a hypothesis. The same goes for a test that has never failed and a deployment nobody has rehearsed. We verify the thing itself, not the intention.
- Refusing to guess beats guessing confidently. A system that says "I am not sure" is almost always more useful than one that quietly files the wrong answer where nobody will look for it.
- You should be able to fire us. Your code, your accounts, your infrastructure, documented well enough that another engineer can pick it up. Work that can only be maintained by its author is not finished.
